Audition/Assessment Guidelines

Students desiring to apply for Mass Communications can reside in any area in Baltimore County. If students live outside of the DPMMS zone they will not receive transportation. This program focuses on a student’s ability to write, speak, and listen in a professional broadcast setting. Using the communication model as a framework, students receive instruction in the use of communication technology including: television and radio broadcasting, video production, desktop publishing, and web design. Teamwork is developed as students work together to produce a variety of programs, including daily news broadcasts, over a closed circuit television system.

On Assessment Day, a rubric will be used to score performances in the following areas.

Part I – Essay
Please bring – Two #2 pencils and an eraser.

All students applying to Deer Park Middle Magnet School will complete a written essay on Assessment Day. Please do not prepare an essay before the Assessment Day. The essay will be scored using a standard rubric and will be factored into the selection process.

Part II – Magnet Assessment Process
No additional items needed

On Assessment Day, students will use the essay written in Part I of the assessment process as a speech delivered to as part of a broadcast. Students will be recorded as part of this process. Students will be judged on standard public speaking elements such as volume, pronunciation, enunciation, and body language. Students should practice reading aloud at home prior to attending the audition
